Potlikker Capital is a community-governed charitable organisation delivering reparative finance to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) farmers across the United States. Established to address historic and ongoing barriers to land, finance, and markets, Potlikker’s mission is to preserve and grow the diversity of America’s farmers while supporting local wealth creation, land regeneration, and food sovereignty.

Its approach is rooted in racial and climate justice, offering tailored, relationship-based capital alongside technical assistance, market connections, and peer-to-peer learning. It works to ensure farmers have the tools, networks, and resources to succeed on their own terms.

Project Overview

Macdoch Foundation has provided core funding to help Potlikker Capital expand its integrated capital model, enabling at least 14 BIPOC farmers each year to receive customised support. This includes flexible, patient finance; assistance with regenerative farming practices; business and technical advice; and access to values-aligned markets. Potlikker also facilitates peer networks that allow farmers to share skills, strategies, and experiences.

The funding supports the scaling of this community-led model, which blends financial innovation with cultural and ecological stewardship, while challenging outdated assumptions about agricultural lending, investment risk, and the role of capital in creating equitable, climate-resilient food systems.

Why this Work is Important

BIPOC farmers in the US face systemic barriers rooted in centuries of exclusion from land ownership, credit, and market opportunities. These inequities limit not only livelihoods but also the resilience and diversity of the food system.

Potlikker Capital directly addresses these challenges, using capital as a tool for repair rather than extraction. By funding Potlikker’s expansion, we support farmers who are producing healthy food, adopting climate-positive practices, and rebuilding intergenerational wealth-strengthening both community autonomy and ecological health for the long term.

Outcomes and Impact

Potlikker Capital is expanding its capacity to deliver reparative finance and holistic support to BIPOC farmers across the United States. Each year, at least 15 farmers will gain access to flexible, patient capital alongside tailored technical assistance and regenerative agriculture expertise. By connecting producers with values-aligned buyers, Potlikker is also strengthening market access and helping to create viable pathways for long-term success.

Beyond financial tools, the organisation fosters communities of practice where farmers can share knowledge, build leadership, and grow collective power.

Over time, this approach is shifting investment norms away from short-term, extractive models and toward relationship-based finance that recognises community governance and lived experience. The long-term impact will be a more equitable food system, with greater climate resilience and stronger ownership and control for farmers historically excluded from agricultural opportunity and decision-making.
